Obituary

Kenneth James Pitts

October 27, 1931 – January 16, 2025

Kenneth James Pitts, 93, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, in Henderson, Nevada with his loved ones by his side.

Born on October 27, 1931, in Los Angeles, Ca to Lou and Ernestine Pitts, Kenneth lived a life full of achievement, dedication, and adventure. He joined the Navy in 1951 as a Radio Technician and was honorably discharged in 1955 before entering UC Berkeley to earn a BS degree in Electronic Engineering in 1957.

His passion for science and education shaped his career and inspired those around him. He earned a Master’s degree from San Jose State University 1964 as he continued his career at NASA’s Ames Research Center at Moffett Field from 1963 to 1982 as an Electronics Engineer. As he approached retirement, he sought to turn to education and began teaching Electronics at Cal Poly SLO for three years before fully retiring in 1986.

In June 1957, Kenneth married his first wife Charlotte, with whom he had two children, Michael and Suzanne. Though their marriage ended in 1988, Kenneth’s love for family remained steadfast. In April 1993, he found love once again, marrying Benita Pitts, who became his forever devoted wife and caretaker, shepherding him through the final years of his life with grace, caring and love.

Tata Ken, or Papa, as we called him, leaves behind a legacy of merriment, curiosity, and family. He is survived by his wife, Benita Pitts; his two children, Michael and Suzanne; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Tata’s love of the outdoors, bicycling and skiing along with the unwavering support he provided to his loved ones, will live on in all of our lives and in all the hearts of those who knew him.
